Systeme.io vs MailerLite: which free plan is better for your first funnel?
They're not identical tools. Systeme.io leads with an all-in-one sales-funnel system; MailerLite leads with email marketing. The choice depends on what you actually need on day one.
October 2026 comparison: the free MailerLite plan changed in June 2026. Many older comparisons still claim a 500-subscriber limit or 12,000 emails per month. Those figures are outdated for the current free plan described in MailerLite's own documentation.

When Systeme.io may fit better
If you want one hosted landing page to lead into several sales or course pages, the dedicated funnel flow can reduce the number of tools you need to connect. Its higher free contact cap is useful if you plan to test multiple opt-ins. The trade-off: only one automation rule on the free plan, so complex segmentation requires extra planning or an upgrade.
A sensible first test is a single opt-in, one promised resource and one optional invitation. You don't need elaborate multi-branch automations to validate that flow.
When MailerLite may fit better
If your primary job is to send a newsletter and build an email relationship, a dedicated email platform might be easier to manage. Its free plan includes three automations, but the allowance of 250 active subscribers and 2,500 emails per month is much smaller. The free plan also offers one landing page, one website and three forms under its current limits.
MailerLite says that exceeding the free contact or sending limits can pause sending and automations until limits are resolved or you upgrade. Consider that before promising a large subscriber launch to your audience.
The no-budget acceptance test
- Write a clear offer: one helpful PDF or worksheet, one reader problem.
- Build a hosted opt-in page and check how it looks on a phone.
- Test consent, the subscription confirmation and resource delivery.
- Export your own test record and check unsubscribe controls.
- Only then publish one useful piece of content with a link to your page, where promotion is permitted.
What about Kit if you only need a newsletter?
For a newsletter-first project that has outgrown 250 free subscribers, Kit currently documents a free tier for up to 10,000 subscribers with unlimited email broadcasts. Visual automations and sequences require a paid plan, so this is not interchangeable with a sales-funnel builder. Check Kit's official Free plan details before deciding.
Limited hands-on test of Systeme.io
On 28 October 2026, we created a custom internal funnel, added a capture-page step, applied a template, edited its heading, saved and deactivated the demo. We did not test live subscriber capture, email deliverability, payment processing or upgrade restrictions. The plan limit comparisons above are taken from vendors' published documentation, not proven in this test.
Our decision rule
For a beginner building a sales funnel with several steps, put Systeme.io on your shortlist. For a newsletter-first project with a small list, also consider MailerLite. If you specifically need more free automation rules, compare those limits instead of prioritizing contact counts alone. There is no universal winner.
