How to create a lead magnet funnel for free

You don't need to buy software to learn whether an audience wants your free resource. You need a specific problem, a trustworthy signup promise, and a way to deliver what you offered.

The quick answer: publish one helpful article or video, offer one useful downloadable resource on a simple opt-in page, send the promised resource, and follow up only with permission. Start with the smallest version that works.

1. Start with a question, not a product

A funnel begins before anyone reaches your page. Write down a real question your ideal customer asks. For example, a new freelance designer might wonder, “What should I ask a client before quoting a project?” This is narrow enough for a useful resource.

Find evidence in public discussions, autocomplete suggestions, and conversations you can genuinely contribute to. A question appearing in autocomplete is a clue—not proof of buyers, search volume, or a viable product.

2. Make one useful resource

One good page is enough for your first lead magnet. For the freelancer example, make a pre-project question sheet with sections for deadlines, budget range, project scope, stakeholders, and file handoff. Put it into a readable PDF or shared document.

  • Promise something concrete and deliver exactly that.
  • Make the resource genuinely usable without a paid upgrade.
  • Keep its title plain: “10 questions to ask before accepting a design project.”
  • Use original text and images or material you have permission to share.

3. Create a single-purpose opt-in page

A clean page should explain who the resource is for, what it helps them do, what is included, and what happens after signup. A sample headline: “Price design projects with fewer surprises.” Then: “Get a printable 10-question discovery checklist.”

A single email field may be enough. Explicitly explain any ongoing emails and collect permission where needed. Link to an accurate privacy policy. Never ask for contact information you don't need.

4. Deliver immediately

Test the process end-to-end using an address you control, without creating fake affiliate transactions. When a person registers, the promised resource should arrive, the download link should open, and unsubscribing should be straightforward. If an email platform asks you to verify a sender identity or domain, resolve that before collecting real subscribers.

5. Follow up with value first

One useful follow-up might explain how to turn checklist answers into a price estimate. Later you can make one optional invitation, such as booking an introductory discussion. A lead magnet is not permission to send unlimited promotions.

6. Measure the step that is broken

SignalWhat it may tell youWhat to change first

Which free tool should you use?

Look for a free plan that can host a basic page, handle opt-ins with appropriate consent, deliver the promised file, and let you export your contacts. There is no universally best option: compare limitations and future costs against the project you are actually building.

One option to research is Systeme.io's official pricing page . We have verified a personal affiliate ID but have not completed an independent hands-on product test. The pricing link above is non-affiliate. If Systeme.io suits your needs, you can also start through our affiliate link. We may earn a commission if you later become a paying customer, at no extra cost to you. A free signup alone does not generate a commission.

Make your own funnel map.

No signup is needed for our interactive planner. Choose an audience, resource and discovery channel to receive a five-step outline you can copy.
